Piper-Heidsieck champagne supplier in the US during the prohibition

The stories of Piper-Heidsieck’s bootlegging missions to transport the Champagne House’s finest to the States via French territory, Saint Pierre and Miquelon are surprising. The cases had made the journey from Reims, France, and it was at this French port that wooden transport cases were broken, and bottles transferred to jute bags filled with salt for their journey to the US. This made disposing bottles in the sea much easier in case they were intercepted by police and subject to inspection.

Live unprohibited

From 1920-1933, the United States went dry. But Prohibition didn’t stop Americans from clinking glasses. While the production, transportation and sale of alcohol was banned, wily bootleggers found ways to smuggle bottles of Piper-Heidsieck to meet the needs of the market.

Because if you can’t escape Prohibition, why not raise a glass to it?
